Cherokee Valley Devotional Recap - by John Tilmon

Apr 03 2016
tilmonToday I want to share with you something that I had to satisfy in my heart and mind in my early Christian walk. Who is Jesus? Is He God, or is He just the Son of God who was sent to earth to die for the sins of man and be raised again and less important than God? If you were to the streets or any public place and asked people “Who is Jesus?” – you would get varying answers from – I have no idea to a prophet, to a good man, to the Son of God, or maybe some “He is God." However, I believe the best way to determine the answer is through scripture. I hope that this will help if any should have questions or doubts about “Who is Jesus”.

In the Book of Isaiah there are several predictions about the coming of the Immanuel as God was speaking to the nation Israel through the His prophet. Isaiah is not the only book in the OT with prophecies about the coming of the Immanuel.

Isa 7:14 – “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel (meaning God with us). Isa 9:6 – For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.–Notice in this verse God did not hold back the description of Immanuel.

As Wonderful Counselor–Jesus walked the earth during His ministry as recorded in the Gospels – He spoke many wise parables and many commands for Christian living. He taught and prepared His disciples to for His death, burial, resurrection and how they would see great things after His return to heaven. After His resurrection He told His disciples about the coming of the Holy Spirit, and the Spirit came.

As Mighty God – As proof of Jesus as God He performed many miracles that no other could, healing people, raising people from death, and rose from the dead Himself as Might God.

As Everlasting Father – Here again shows Jesus as God the Father. He will reign as Judge over all people, both believers and non-believers. He will reign forever because all authority was given to Him by the Father as He stated in Matt. 28:18.

As Prince of Peace – Jesus preached peace and love during His time on earth. He is the one true Lord and Savior who brings peace to the heart and soul of man. He will return and there will be peace on earth and He will reign as the Prince of Peace.

Now let’s to move to Book of John in the NT and allow the scriptures to speak to us: John 1:1-14:

1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2. He was in the beginning with God.

3. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

4. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

5. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

6. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

7. This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.

8. He (John) was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.

10. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.

11. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.

12. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

13. who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

There is not much commentary I can add to John’s writing as he walked and lived with Jesus for about three years and was inspired by the Holy Spirit in his writing. The proof once again that Jesus is God is in V1, 10 and 14.

One more scripture I would like to share with you as Paul an Apostle gave witness to Jesus in Col 1:15-18:

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything He might have the supremacy.

Through the scriptures I believe we have established the true identity of Jesus. He is the image of the invisible God, the Son of God, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace and much, much more.

My question today: Who is Jesus to you?

Last August six men from our church went to Sturgis, SD to the 75Th Motorcycle Rally. There was more than a million people visited that area during the weeklong rally. For (4) afternoons we worked in a tent witnessing to people by sharing our faith. We had only three minutes to share how our life was before salvation, how we came to salvation, and how our life changed after our salvation experience. I would like to share that with you today:

Before I became a Christian, there were many things going on in my life. I was selfish and hard hearted – always seeking things that I thought would make me happy such as golf, money, cars, alcohol, motorcycles, and many other things. However, I never seemed to find anything that would give me peace and true happiness I was seeking.

I also had a great fear of death and was not sure where I would go when I died. I remember when I was coming home from a business trip, along with another pilot, we were in a single engine plane, it was winter, we were in the clouds, it was snowing and we were over mountains. The engine started to lose power. I knew that if we were to crash in the mountains it would be tragic. It was as if my life passed before me with much fear.

I was divorced, my life was in a mess. Then I met someone who invited me to go to church with them and there I started to hear the truth about my life, how I was a sinner, that my sins had separated me from God, that God had sent His Son Jesus to die for me on a cross and by repentance and faith in Jesus I could be forgiven, and have a loving relationship with the true and living God. I received that free gift of eternal life by repenting, telling God I was sorry for my sins, believing in Jesus and turning my life over to Him.

After my salvation experience came peace and joy into my life beyond understanding, and I no longer have that fear of death, because I have the assurance that when I die I will go to heaven to be with Jesus forever.

I leave you with this: Where are you today, what are you seeking, if it’s salvation, peace and joy – Jesus is the answer. If you would like to talk after our meeting come and see me.

Tomorrow is EASTER SUNDAY – great day to be in church, I hope you will attend.
