Wedgewood Devotional Recap - John Tilmon

tilmonWhat does America need today? Revival and turn to God! What does the world need today? The same! How can we as Christian be a part of revival in our country? I believe that revival starts with people who pray, repent and obey. A scripture comes to mind that God gave to Solomon in response to Solomon prayers. This was a time when the people were not living to please God.
2 Chron. 4:14 – If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sins and heal their land.

Let’s think about this scripture„„...
Conditions: – Possession was mentioned – God said My people – we must be one of His to have an active relationship with Him.„„
To come to repentance we must humble ourselves – Scripture tells us that God resist the proud.„„
Repentance: Pray and seek the face of God, and turn from our wicked ways = repentance and God will hear from heaven.
Now let’s look at the benefits of repentance: God will hear us, He will forgive us our sins and heal our land. I understand God was speaking to the King of Israel, but the same benefits for USA or any other country are available.

I would like to present two acts of repentance from scripture. First is the life of David – King of Israel, he was on the roof of his house late one afternoon, saw a beautiful woman bathing, sent for her, together they sinned against God. The woman became pregnant and to cover it up David sent for her husband to come home, who was fighting for Israel in a battle, this man Uriah was one of David’s mighty warriors. Uriah was told to go home and be with his wife. He refused to go home and sleep with his wife because of his friends and fellow warriors were in battle. David sent Uriah back to the battle ground and he was killed because David had him placed in the heat of the battle. David was confronted of his sins by Nathan the prophet and David repented. He wrote about his repentance in Ps 51 and I want to read you a portion of that:

(Ps 51:3-4) 3. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. 4. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge. David continued his confession to the Lord whom he loved.(Ps 51:9-12) 9. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. 10. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. An act of true repentance as written by David.

Another example is in the Corinthians letters written by Paul. In 1 Cor. Paul wrote to them about sinful acts that were taking place within the Church and this troubled Paul because of his love for that church. He came down upon them very hard. Then he heard of their repentance and wrote a second letter 2 Cor. I want to read a few verses where Paul commends them for their sorrowfulness and repentance.
(2 Cor 7:8-10) 8. Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it — I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while— 9. yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10. Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.

It would be easy for us to say I don’t commit adultery, or I have not killed anyone or I have not tried to destroy a church body. But scripture tells us that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. When we sin we must repent.

NO repentance = NO peace

I’ve been there, I know. In closing I want to mention some of the benefit of repentance:
If you do not know the Lord Jesus it can bring salvation providing you are sincere.
If you are a child of God, it brings peace and joy that is beyond understanding.
Repentance brings you into a closer relationship with our wonderful Lord we serve. We should have a desire to walk closer to the Lord today and everyday?

I hope this help us understand a little more about repentance before God.
